How to Minimize or Prevent Wrinkles

Simple Steps Can Stop Skin Wrinkling

In this article, you will find 13 simple steps you can take to stop further skin wrinkling. These include, but are not limited to: 1) avoiding the sun and tanning beds; 2) wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn; 3) Don't Smoke; 4) Don't Drink Alcohol Excessively; 5) Get Adequate Sleep; 6) Sleep on Your Back; 7) Don't Squint; 8) Eat More Fish; 9) Eat More Soy; 10) Trade Coffee for Cocoa; 11) Eat More Fresh Fruits and Vegetables; 12) Don't Over–Wash Your Face; and 13) Use Premium All–Natural Body Lotions (like TanSome Sunless Tanning Lotion).

You do not have to surrender to wrinkles; you can wage war against them and take definitive action to either delay their onset or minimize the ones you have already have. Many women (as well as men) believe that the looks of aging skin are inevitable, but with the anti–aging information and technologies we have today, you really can look as young as you feel!!

Avoid the Sun and Tanning Beds

UV–light (UV–A and UV–B) is the No. 1 cause of wrinkles and skin cancer!! Hundreds of studies have documented the impact of UV–light, and they all come to the same findings. In one study that looked at identical twins, it was found sun and/or tanning bed exposure was even more important than heredity. Siblings who limited their sun time had fewer wrinkles and looked younger than their sun–worshiping twins.

When you go outdoors, limit sun exposure, especially during peak radiation (10AM – 2PM Standard Time; 11AM – 3PM Daylight Savings Time). Also, wear broad–brimmed hats and tightly–woven protective clothing. If you want a tan, use a sunless tanning lotion.

Wear Sunscreen to Prevent Sunburn

When you go out in the sun, wear sunscreen! It will help prevent wrinkles and protect you from skin cancer at the same time. Apply a liberal application of sunscreen (30 SPF or higher). Apply more often if engaged in water activities or perspiring. Apply at least 30 minutes before you go outside into the sun.

Don't Smoke

More and more studies are confirming that cigarette smoke ages skin prematurely –– mostly by releasing an enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin, important components of the skin. Sibling studies done at the Twin Research Unit at St. Thomas Hospital in London found the brother or sister who smoked tended to have more wrinkled skin, and up to 40% thinner than the non–smoker.

Don't Drink Alcohol Excessively

Excessively drinking alcohol will literally kill your skin's blood vessels. "Excessive" is defined as "more than one glass of wine per day for a woman, and more than two glasses of wine per day for a man." The active ingredient in red wine (resveratrol) is very healthy and promotes longevity. However, more alcohol can lead to more subcutaneous blood vessel vasoconstriction, and further blood vessel death. You can get the benefits of red wine without drinking the red wine; you can buy concentrated supplemental resveratrol from any vitamin shop. Educate yourself about this very important chemical, and take it daily; it will help you live longer!

Get Adequate Sleep

When you don't get enough sleep, the body produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Get enough rest, and you'll produce more HGH (human growth hormone), which helps skin remain thick, more "elastic," and less likely to wrinkle.

Sleep on Your Back

Sleeping in certain positions night after night leads to "sleep lines" –– wrinkles that become etched into the surface of your skin and don't disappear once you're up. Sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on cheeks and chin, while sleeping face down gives you a furrowed brow. To reduce facial wrinkle formation, sleep on your back.

Don't Squint –– Get Reading Glasses

Any repetitive facial movement –– like squinting –– overworks facial muscles, forming a groove beneath the skin's surface. This groove eventually becomes a wrinkle. Also VERY IMPORTANT: wear sunglasses. It will not only protect your eyes, but also protect the skin around your eyes from sun damage; and further keep you from squinting.

Eat More Fish –– Especially Salmon

Salmon (along with other cold–water fish) is a great source of protein –– one of the building blocks of great skin –– it's also an awesome source of an essential fatty acid known as Omega–3. Essential fatty acids help nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful, helping to reduced wrinkles. "Essential" means that they must be consumed via food or supplements since your body cannot produce them.

Educate yourself of the active ingredients in Omega–3 (DHA + EPA = total grams of Omega–3). Simple fish oil will do nothing for you unless it contains the active ingredients DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Most people should consume at least 2,000 mg Omega–3 (EPA + DHA) daily, especially if they are taking a statin drug (statin drugs lower LDL cholesterol). People with high triglyceride levels may need to take up to 4,000 mg of EPA + DHA daily to bring their triglycerides below 150 mg/dL.

Eat More Soy

Research shows soy may help protect or heal some of the sun's photoaging damage. In one recent study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, researchers reported that a soy–based supplement (other ingredients included fish protein and extracts from white tea, grape seed, and tomato, as well as several vitamins) improved skin's structure, and firmness after just six months of use.

Trade Coffee for Cocoa

Cocoa contains high levels of two dietary flavanols (epicatchin and catechin) that protects skin from sun damage, improves circulation to skin cells, improves hydration, and makes the skin look and feel softer and smoother. If chocolate were discovered today, it would be found only in health food stores.

If you want the benefits of cocoa without weight gain, take a daily cocoa supplement (found at local vitamin shops). Take at least 100 mg of cocoa polyphenol daily. Discuss this with your medical provider before beginning. Visit Science Daily to learn more about this essential supplement.

Eat More Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

The key to fresh fruits and vegetables are their inherit antioxidant compounds. These compounds fight damage caused by free radicals (unstable molecules that can damage cells), which in turn, helps skin look younger and more radiant, and protects against the effects of photoaging.

If you want to lose weight, eat raw vegetables. If you want more nutrients, then you must cook/steam your vegetables. More and more studies are finding that to receive the full benefits of a vegetable's cadre of nutrients, it must be cooked to 140° F. Uncooked vegetables contain more nutrients, but they are bio–unavailable for the body. Visit Science Daily for more information about raw vs cooked vegetables.

Don't Over–Wash Your Face

According to dermatologists at the University of Maryland Medical Center, washing your face with tap water more than once per day strips the natural barrier oils and moisture that protect against wrinkles (the chlorine in tap water is harsh on your skin). To combat washing and over–washing, wash your face no more than once per day; use a liquid soap or cleanser with a neutral pH, and one that contains no fragrances or deodorants, but does contain moisturizers. Apply a premium moisturizer as soon as you pat dry your face. Your premium moisturizer should contain natural oils, butters, antioxidants, and vitamins to give your skin the best possible treatment.

Use Premium All–Natural Body Lotions

Women often overlook the power of a simple premium moisturizer as an anti–aging product. Premium moisturizers contain ingredients to penetrate into the skin, causing the skin to retain moisture to become plump, Plump skin reduces the lines and creases caused by too much sun, too many tanning beds, and too many years.

Skin that retains moisture simply looks better and healthier, so lines and creases are far less noticeable. Make sure your moisturizer contains natural oils, vitamins, and butters for maximum results, like those found in (Tansome Ingredients). Apply a premium moisturizer on your entire body at least once per day, and on the areas that are exposed to the sun at least twice per day. If you wash your hands often, apply hand lotion often.
