Too Much Sun Makes You Look Old

Everyone knows that too much sun exposure causes wrinkled, leathery skin and can even be deadly! Don't let your short–term quest for a suntan override your common sense for your long–term health.
  • Avoid overexposure to UV–light.
  • Tan with a sunless tanning lotion. Sunless tanning lotion is the only safe and effective way to tan.
  • Use a UV–A / UV–B suncreen and/or sunblock (SPF 45). Apply a generous amount of sunscreen (about a palmful) and reapply after swimming, toweling dry, or perspiring. Use sunscreen even on hazy or overcast days. Reapply every hour outdoors if engaged in water activities.
  • Avoid the sun during the mid–day hours (noon ±2 hours). Be sure to account for Daylight Savings Time (noon becomes 11:00AM).
  • Seek shade when available. If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun's rays are at their strongest.
  • Slip on a shirt: Cover up with protective clothing to guard as much skin as possible when you are out in the sun. Choose comfortable clothes made of tightly woven fabrics that you cannot see through when held up to a light.
  • Slap on a hat: Cover your head with a wide–brimmed hat, shading your face, ears, and neck. If you choose a baseball cap, remember to protect your ears and neck with sunscreen.
  • Wrap on sunglasses: Wear sunglasses with 99% to 100% UV–absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin.
  • Follow these practices to protect your skin even on cloudy or overcast days. UV–A rays travel through clouds and windows.
  • Minimize your time under the sun. Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps. Determine Your Skin Type before you go out into the sun.
